The VectorVGA Pro Scan Convertor allows stroke video signals from legacy avionics and head-up display (HUD) generators to be displayed on modern raster displays. This is needed for many applications such as: flight video recording, high-fidelity hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation of HUDs and multi-purpose displays (MPD), simulator repeater displays for instructor stations, ground test equipment, hand-held field testers, and avionics modernization. The VectorVGA Pro convertor can be used as a stand-alone video format convertor, incorporated into form-fit-function (FFF) replacement displays, or integrated with other video components to provide features such as static overlays and dynamic raster video mixing for custom applications.
HUDs were first implemented with stroke CRTs that were the only technology at the time suitable for projecting extremely bright, high-resolution symbology onto the pilot's field of view. Reduced-size CRT projectors led to helmet-mounted display (HMD) units. Many stroke CRT projectors operate in both stroke and raster modes whereby stroke symbology is time-multiplexed with raster video sources such as LANTIRN, Panoramic Format (PF), FLIR, and night vision video to provide dynamic composite displays during flight.
Avionics instruments also used stroke CRT tubes to produce bright, high-resolution instrument displays with the capability of overlaying raster video from the flight computer, radar, and navigation systems. Many stroke avionics and HUD video generators use hybrid control signals that are not compatible with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) video equipment. Each control signal must be properly handled to scan convert the analog video signals without degrading quality.
